Possible side effects
1. Patients with active cancer or a recent history of cancer
NAD⁺ may promote repair and energy production in tumor cells as well, which could theoretically stimulate the growth of some types of cancer. As a precaution, its use is not recommended without the approval of an oncologist.
2. Individuals with severe liver diseases
Some NAD⁺ precursors (such as nicotinamide) in high doses may increase liver enzymes or overload liver metabolism. It is advisable to monitor liver function if used for prolonged periods or combined with other supplements.
3. Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There are no clinical safety studies of NR or NMN in pregnant or breastfeeding women. It is recommended to avoid its use during these stages, unless medically advised.
4. Individuals with autoimmune disorders
NAD⁺ can modulate the immune system; some reports suggest it might alter the immune response. Patients with active autoimmune diseases (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) should consult a doctor before use.
5. Hypotension or treatments for blood pressure
Extracts such as pine bark or grape seed may have a vasodilating and antioxidant effect, which, in combination with hypotensive medications, could enhance the decrease in blood pressure.
6. Simultaneous use with chemotherapy or radiotherapy
It has been observed in laboratory studies that raising NAD⁺ levels may reduce the effectiveness of some treatments that rely on oxidative damage. For this reason, its use should be discontinued or discussed with the oncologist before taking it during oncological therapies.
